Step 03

Intervention Design

What will we do about it?

What happens in this step?

This step is about designing a targeted intervention plan based on the validated hypothesis. Your team identifies the specific skill to address, sets a measurable goal, selects an evidence-based intervention, and creates a plan for implementation and progress monitoring.

Goal: Develop a targeted intervention plan that addresses the validated hypothesis and includes a clear goal, implementation plan, and progress monitoring.

Identify Target Skill(s)

Determine the specific skill or behavior the intervention will address based on the validated hypothesis. Keep the focus narrow — target the skill most likely to improve the student's identified area of need.

Develop a Measurable Goal

Write a clear, measurable goal that defines the expected level of performance and provides a target for monitoring progress.

Develop the Intervention Plan

Define who will provide the intervention, what will be taught, when and where it will occur, and how often it will be delivered.

Select an Evidence-Based Intervention

Choose an intervention that directly addresses the identified target skill and is supported by evidence for the student's goal.

Plan for Progress Monitoring

Identify the progress monitoring measure and monitoring schedule that will be used to track progress toward the student's goal.

Key Output

A targeted, evidence-based intervention plan with clearly defined goals, implementation details, and a progress monitoring plan.

Next Step

Once the intervention plan is in place, schedule a follow-up meeting to review progress monitoring data and determine whether the intervention is producing the desired results.
